Not sure if it's asbestos?
Homes built before the mid-1980s are very likely to have asbestos somewhere, and anything built up to 1990 may too. These clues help, but only a lab test of a sample can confirm it.
Signs it probably is
- The house or structure was built before about 1985
- Grey, hard, brittle sheeting with a weathered, dimpled surface
- Deep, rounded corrugations on fences and roofs
- Capping or trims made of the same grey cement
- Broken edges that look fibrous or layered
Don't do this
- Drill, cut, sand or snap the sheets
- Pressure clean or scrub the surface
- Pile soil, sleepers or garden beds against it
- Put broken pieces in the household bin or a skip
- Start demolition before you know what's there
The 10 m² rule: in WA, removing more than 10 square metres of bonded asbestos needs a licensed removalist, and friable (crumbly) asbestos always does.

Why Belmont has so much of it
Belmont is wedged between the Swan River and Perth Airport, and most of its streets went up in the decades straight after the war. That timing matters: it was the peak era for asbestos cement in Australian houses. Drive through Cloverdale, Kewdale or Rivervale and you'll still see original grey sheet fences running down the side of quarter-acre blocks. A lot of those blocks are now being renovated, split or rebuilt, and that's usually the moment the old sheeting has to come out.
We arrange removal across the whole of Perth, but Belmont and the suburbs around it are where a lot of our work starts.
Jobs we see most around Belmont
If any of these sound like your place, it's worth getting it checked.
- Side and rear boundary fences on original blocks
- Garage and carport roofs behind older homes
- Eave linings disturbed by roof or gutter work
- Clearing a block before subdivision or a knock-down rebuild

Six things to ask any asbestos removalist
Whoever you use, these questions separate the professionals from the cowboys.
What's your licence number?
Every WorkSafe WA licence can be checked. Make sure the class covers your job.
Is disposal in the price?
The quote should include wrapping, transport and tip fees, not add them later.
How will you control dust?
Expect wetting, whole-sheet removal and immediate wrapping, never cutting or breaking.
Will I get a clearance certificate?
For indoor work especially, get written confirmation the area is safe.
What happens below ground?
For fences, buried sections should come out too, not be snapped off at ground level.
Is the quote fixed?
Get it in writing before work starts, with anything that could change it spelled out.

Questions
Straight answers
How do I book a quote?
Call 08 6558 1852 and tell us your suburb and what needs removing. A licensed removalist gets back to you to arrange a look at the job and a written quote.
Do I need a licensed removalist?
In WA, removing more than 10 square metres of bonded asbestos needs a licensed removalist, and friable asbestos always does. Most fences and roofs are well over 10 square metres.
Can you tell me if it's asbestos over the phone?
Not for certain. Age and appearance give a strong hint, but only a laboratory test of a sample can confirm it. If you're unsure, treat it as asbestos until you know otherwise.
Where does the asbestos go?
It's kept wet, wrapped in heavy plastic, labelled and taken to a facility approved to accept asbestos. It never goes in a household bin or a general skip.
Do you only work in Belmont?
No. Belmont and the nearby eastern suburbs are home turf, but we arrange removal right across Perth, from Two Rocks down to Mandurah and out to the Hills.
Who actually does the removal?
Every job is done by an independent removalist licensed by WorkSafe WA. We match your job with one who covers your area and holds the right licence for it.
