Asbestos in Belmont homes
Belmont is wedged between the Swan River and Perth Airport, and most of its streets went up in the decades straight after the war. That timing matters: it was the peak era for asbestos cement in Australian houses. Drive through Cloverdale, Kewdale or Rivervale and you'll still see original grey sheet fences running down the side of quarter-acre blocks. A lot of those blocks are now being renovated, split or rebuilt, and that's usually the moment the old sheeting has to come out.
If your place was built before the mid-1980s, check the fences, eaves, roof and any sheds before you start renovating or demolishing.
